Hello and welcome to Little Owls!

My name is Miss Fell and I am the Class Teacher. 

It is wonderful to support the children begin their journey in Key Stage One and continue their journey up through the school and watch them grow, develop, learn and have fun!

We have lots of exciting learning opportunities in Little Owls such as explosive science, wonderful writing and fun maths!

Homework

Reading

To support your child at home we would like all children to read at home every day. In Little Owls we have Eddie the Reading Teddy who loves to listen to children read and goes home with a different child from Little Owls each weekend to listen to lots of wonderful stories. Children also write in his journal about the stories they have read to Eddie, which ones they enjoyed the most and why. We then share the stories that have been shared over the weekend to the rest of the class.

Spellings

Each week children have set spellings, teaching different rules. They are tested on a Monday.

Our Learning

Year One is a special year of children's education as they begin to take steps from the play-based learning of Reception into more structured learning, while still being given plenty of time to explore, play and follow their interests. 

We take a gradual and nurturing approach. Children in year 1 will continue to learn through practical activities, stories and exploration, while also being introduced to short whole class sessions such as phonics, maths and English. Our aim is to build on the strong foundations from Reception helping them to develop greater independence and confidence in their learning. 

Throughout the day, we try to build opportunities for active learning. Children have opportunities for 'choosing time' to select from different activities, work collaboratively with their friends, and enjoy time outdoors. We believe these experiences are vital for developing creativity, problem solving and their social skills. This time is learning led but in a more practical way and gives the children the opportunity to choose their learning activities. 

As the year progresses, we adapt 'choosing time' to the children's needs and the curriculum to make sure children are ready for their next step in School.
