Mastering Mathematics

At our school, we believe that every child can succeed in mathematics. To achieve this, we use Master the Curriculum, a structured and well-sequenced scheme of work aligned with the White Rose approach to maths mastery.

This programme is designed to build a deep, lasting understanding of mathematical concepts by introducing new ideas in small, cumulative steps. By ensuring children fully grasp one concept before moving on to the next, we build resilient, confident mathematicians who can apply their skills with ease.

Our maths teaching strongly echoes our Montessori-inspired ethos, prioritising hands-on, practical learning. We utilise the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach, meaning children always begin by exploring new mathematical ideas using physical, tactile resources. Just like the self-correcting, practical materials in a Montessori environment, our pupils use physical manipulatives to touch, move, and physically construct their mathematical thinking. Only when they thoroughly understand the concrete concept do they transition to pictorial representations (such as bar models and part-whole diagrams) and, eventually, to abstract numbers and symbols.

Through this rich, tactile approach, we foster strong mathematical fluency. Fluency at our school is about far more than just memorising times tables; it is about developing a deep "number sense" and the ability to choose the most efficient strategy to solve a problem.
