On our class pages you will see an overview of the learning and objectives of each class, as well as a welcome from the class teacher.

Owlets – pre-school

Our Owlets class is the youngest group in the school, and has 10 two and three-year-olds.

In this class, children are introduced to the EYFS curriculum and begin learning the routines and expectations of Anstey. Mrs D is our pre-school lead, supported by Mrs Hayes. The team plan wonderful activities that blend the principles of child-centred learning with coverage of the curriculum.

Fledglings – Nursery and Reception

Our Nursery and reception classes are combined, and have a maximum of ten pupils in each year group.

Mixed-age classes help all children: the younger pupils have multiple role models who show them the routines of the classroom and older pupils can extend their learning by explaining and demonstrating skills and knowledge.

Fledglings cover the Early Years Framework, where they develop early reading and numeracy. The curriculum has three prime areas:

• Communication and language
• Physical development
• Personal, social and emotional development

There are also four specific areas:

• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the world
• Expressive arts and design

Learning in EYFS is split between traditional teacher-led instruction and child-led activities.

Teacher-led instruction supports learning in phonics and maths, as children need specific expertise in order to build the skills required.

Children spend between one and two hours each day in continuous provision, where they explore their interests within the context of a given theme or topic. Teachers in the setting act as facilitators during these sessions, posing questions and helping children develop their curiosity and problem-solving skills.

Little Owls – Key Stage One

Year one and two are the beginning of the national primary curriculum, which children will follow until the end of year six. The KS1 curriculum has been designed to introduce the curriculum subjects, and start the process of building knowledge sequentially. English and maths are still very much in focus and children will continue working on phonics, as well as becoming fluent readers through frequent practice.

In Little Owls, teacher-led activities become the primary delivery method for the curriculum. Sessions of instruction are short and precise, and children are given multiple opportunities to practise new skills.

In year one, children are given opportunities to use our continuous provision so that they have a gentle transition from EYFS. This may involve 'choosing' activities that have been specifically planned and chosen to consolidate the learning in the curriculum, and it may take place outside in our Little Owls outside area, which is equipped with tables and materials to support outdoor learning.

Wise Owls - Key Stage Two

Our Year three and four class is where we get pupils ready for their next phase and the transition to middle school. KS2 builds on the skills and knowledge developed in KS1, and children are encouraged to go deeper into each subject, pursuing answers to more complex and sophisticated questions. 

Teaching and instruction remains carefully sequenced and precise so that children build stamina for learning and can work for extended periods.
